Basic Lottery Strategies Overview

Many people wonder to them, is it true, can we win the lottery if we play according to a certain strategy or is it all pure luck. Is following all those complicated mathematical and statistical theories is better than just closing your eyes and pointing to numbers, or even using those computer generated picks? The fact remains the same, winning this desired jackpot has small chances, probability speaking. As en example, in order to win the Mega Millions first prize the chances stand at 1: 175,711,536.

Each person has his internal lottery strategies  for picking the numbers they believe will give them the chance in winning that somewhat out of reach jackpot. Some use the computer random generated numbers and some pick the same numbers over and over as they have some representation for them. Some people can even win with those preferences but maybe adhering to those other strategies might assist to elevate the odds of winning. A series of different strategies will be reviewed here:

One efficient strategy is called the hot and cold numbers. The method simply checks past draws, for example over the last year, to see which numbers were drawn lately, designated as Hot Numbers and which numbers were not drawn over a long period, designated as Cold Numbers. The method now suggests two options. One is to choose the Hot Numbers, as they seem to appear more frequently and therefore have higher odds of reappearing soon again. The other option, argues the opposite, it claims that since the numbers have already appeared, it is best to choose Cold Numbers that have better odds at being drawn. It is hard to say which method is better and every player must choose the strategy best suited for him.

How It Began
Back in 1988 It was originally called, Lotto America began – Four years later, it changed its name to the Powerball Lottery. One important aspect of Powerball was that it was the first to use a two drum system, which means it has two sets of balls that are drawn. This means players have to choose two sets of numbers and match them to win. With the two draw system, there are several more levels of prize winners. To win at the lottery, players need to match all five numbers plus the Powerball number.
The odds of winning any prize are 1 in 35.

Picking Numbers
Over the years, how numbers have been chosen has changed several times. As of 2009, players pick five numbers from between one and 59, and a Powerball number from between one and 39. Matching all the numbers will win the jackpot. When someone wins the jackpot they can choose to have a single lump sum paid to them, or they can have 30 payments paid to them over 29 years. The minimum jackpot for the lottery is $20 million and if there are no winners, the jackpot is rolled over.
